Welcome to the Weekly Wrap-Up! Every Friday, I take the time to compile a list of events, articles, and fun tips and tricks for associations that I have found in my journeys around the web. It’s also a recapping of my key takeaways from the weekly Twitter chat, #assnchat. This post is a resource for association professionals, just in case they missed something that would and could be beneficial now or down the road.
I’m cheating and I’m writing this on Thursday and posting it on Friday. Why? Because I will be attending SXSW here in Austin, Texas for the next few days. Are you going? Want to meet up? Let me know! I’d love to meet folks face-to-face! My focus for going to SXSW this year is Social Media (of course), and how we can utilize its power for the good (not evil). I’m excited and I’m sure I’ll be sending out a few tweets every now and then to share with you all. So don’t forget to follow me on twitter!
Fun question for the day! If you could RENAME your association anything else, what would it be? Give your answers in the comments! I’d love to see what you come up with.
Enjoy the Wrap-up!

- Most of my life I have tried preparing for the future the best that I could. Sitting deep in thought, going around and around looking at all the options and all the possibilities before moving forward had a dizzying effect. I’ve struggled with anxiety. And here’s what that did for me: Nothing.
Community Requires Courage by Joe Gerstandt.
- I think that community requires much more than simply sharing physical or other kinds of space. I think that real community demands a certain amount of mutual commitment, a certain amount of relational courage. If we break it down to the basics, relationships can be built of two things, difference and commonality.
Trends in Work Culture: Make Yours Work For Less by Shannon Neeser.
- You can probably think of a few companies with really great work culture. It’s easy because people are talking about them. Creating a unique and positive work culture goes a long way in recruiting and keeping employees, engaged, productive and likely to stick around for years. Bottom line, your organization will be more successful.

- My colleague Dorothy Pomerantz notes that this weekend, the re-issued 3-D version of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, pulled down about $23 million in the Box Office over the weekend. This got my mind to pondering the mistakes that people make, ranging from making the Star Wars prequels to reissuing them in 3-D to actually going to relive the misery that was The Phantom Menace all over again.
#assnchat Takeaways
I’m starting to feel like every #assnchat is the beginning of a revolution. “We are the movers and shakers and idea-makers…” So many amazing, progressive, exciting ideas come from these chats and if you aren’t a part of them, you’re missing out. Kiki L’Italien gave us a fantastically progressive topic to talk about this week: Reinventing Associations. You can check out the compilation of tweets for this week’s chat at KiKi’s page.
Here are my favorite tweets from the chat! Enjoy!
